Karen Berry

Veterans Advocacy Specialist

Retired Brigadier General Karen Berry joined Delaware Tech in 2023 as a veterans advocacy specialist at the Owens Campus after 36 years serving the country in leadership roles with the Delaware and Connecticut National Guards. She made history as the first female in the Delaware National Guard to hold a Brigade Command position and earn the rank of Brigadier General. In her civilian life, Berry worked in the Indian River School District as a math teacher and specialist for more than two decades.

When the opportunity to combine both her military experience and her work as an educator presented itself, she was thrilled. As a new member of the Delaware Tech community, Berry immediately felt at home after running into three people she already knew on her first day on the job.

“I live close to the Owens Campus, so I was very happy when Dr. Brainard asked if I would consider becoming an advocate for the students,” Berry said.

In her current role, she works with military-affiliated students and staff, which can include veterans of active-duty service, National Guard or Reserves, a spouse or dependent of an active-duty service member, or a family member of a veteran. Her primary focus is to help resolve any issues or concerns military-affiliated students may have, so they can remain focused on completing their education. She looks forward to her first Delaware Tech graduation ceremony and celebrating with students she has come to know through her veterans advocacy work.

Berry holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering Technology from the University of Delaware, a Master of Education in Mathematics from Salisbury State University, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. In her free time, she enjoys being on or near the water and spending time with her family.
